Karystianou, whose daughter was among the 57 people killed in the Tempe train collision in February 2023, denounced the outcome as a betrayal of justice. “Shame,” she wrote on social media. “Karamanlis, for a misdemeanour. The sky cried yesterday.”

Her criticism was aimed not only at the government, but also at opposition parties who had previously pledged support. “For 2.5 years we’ve heard promises from the entire opposition,” she wrote. “So many lies.”

The victims’ association had proposed a motion describing the case as one of “ultimate treason”. It was backed by MPs from minor parties and independents but rejected by the majority.

“Your actions guide our steps. We will constantly be ahead of you,” Karystianou declared. “Because otherwise, with such a deeply entangled government and the precious crutches of the so-called opposition, a bright day will not dawn – not for us, not for democracy.”
