Allegedly, numerous FETO/PYD members were each sent a $1 bill that was “blessed” by the exiled cleric (and suspected FETO leader) Fetullah Gulen himself. A number of Turkish media outlets initially reported that all of the $1 bills had serial numbers starting with the letter “F”, the first letter of Gulen’s first name; but later media reports indicate bills with serial numbers starting with other letters also exist. In fact, different serial number first-letters are now speculated to translate to different positions and degrees of influence within FETO/PYD, with possession of an “F” $1 indicating a high ranking within the organization.

As bizarre as the $1 saga sounds, Turkish police and media outlets report that the single bills have been found on a large number of civil servants, soldiers, and businessmen arrested in different cities for ties to the failed coup attempt. The possession of a single $1 bill is reportedly now included with the evidence against those arrested. One popular speculation is that businessmen carried the banknotes for “luck and bounty” while for Gulenist army members they were a way of recognizing one another.

In what is perhaps a less frugal development, police has found several lockers full of American dollars in the Turkish Armed Forces High Command building in Ankara last Friday—allegedly stored there by a number of putschist soldiers who predicted that the value of the American dollar against the Turkish lira would rise after the coup and converted their life savings.
