Thessaloniki: Police raid student-occupied building at AUTH – Stun grenades and tear gas used on campus

Earlier today, 30 April, Greek police entered the grounds of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) to remove students who had occupied a university building earlier that morning. The operation, which was carried out at the request of university authorities, involved the use of tear gas and stun grenades within the campus. So far, there are no reports of any arrests.
According to Voria.gr, tensions flared around midday as police moved in to the “Steki Fysikou” space, which had been reoccupied in the morning. This is the latest in a series of similar operations carried out in recent weeks across the country – from the “Evangelismos” squat in Heraklion, Crete, to the “Exostrefis” space in the Athens neighbourhood of Exarchia.
Earlier in the day, police had gathered outside the Faculty of Sciences building after the renewed occupation of “Steki Fysikou” by students and supporters. When officers moved in, students protested the police presence, and the situation quickly escalated. In response, police used flashbangs and tear gas. According to thesstoday officers brought cutting tools to break the chains securing the entrance to the occupied building.
As SKAI reported, later in the day, tensions eased and the atmosphere outside the faculty remained calm, with students still gathered peacefully. There have been no reports of arrests among those showing solidarity with the occupying students.
