According to the latest information, the man was an officer with the Gythio Fire Service. He suddenly became unwell and collapsed during a firefighting operation.
An operation was immediately launched to transport him from the scene, while an ambulance from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) was dispatched to the area. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the firefighter died.
Reports indicate that he had not suffered burns and that his death was due to medical causes. The incident occurred in an area where there was no active fire front, while the officer was carrying his equipment.
His death follows those of two young firefighters in Rethymno earlier today.
