TPP joins Mare Jonio crew in Mediterranean refugee rescue mission

The rescue vessel Mare Jonio, operated by Mediterranea Saving Humans, is resuming its critical mission in the central Mediterranean after a 20-day seizure by Italian authorities. Italian media, alongside The Press Project reporter Nektaria Psaraki, are documenting the operation from the perspective of the Greek mission, accompanying Jason Apostolopoulos and the crew of Mare Jonio.
This mission comes after a violent attack by the self-proclaimed “Libyan Coast Guard” against both rescuers and refugees.
With journalistic eyes now directly on the open sea, ThePressProject will provide in-depth coverage, including detailed reports and videos, offering a close look at the life-saving efforts and the ongoing challenges faced by those navigating the dangerous waters in search of safety.
TPP journalist Nektaria Psaraki joining the crew stated:
“The Press Project is honoured to join Mediterranea Saving Humans and Jason Apostolopoulos on this critical mission. With journalistic eyes, we are here to document the crimes taking place in the central Mediterranean. We will follow the crew of the Mare Jonio in their search and rescue efforts for refugees, providing you with detailed reports and videos that capture exactly what is happening on these perilous waters.”
Jason Apostolopoulos added:
“We are relieved to set sail again after a very challenging period, during which the Italian Coast Guard detained our vessel for 20 days following a violent attack by Libyan militias in international waters. These militias, funded by the European Union, are tasked with intercepting refugee boats and returning the people to Libyan slave markets. It is more imperative than ever for us to be present, not only to save lives but to expose the daily crimes being committed with the full knowledge and complicity of the European Union and its member states.”
