
A desperate rescue operation unfolded today on the shores of Chios island, following a devastating boat sinking involving refugees. Local news outlet alithia.gr reports the tragic loss of three lives in the incident, while 14 survivors have been rescued and are awaiting medical attention from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAV). According to public broadcaster ERT, among the rescued are two men, four women, and eight children.
The rescue effort has seen the mobilisation of various agencies, including the Chios Port Authority’s maritime units, alongside Coast Guard and Police forces conducting operations from the shore. The Fire Brigade has also been dispatched to assist in the operation.
Initial reports suggest that the ill-fated vessel was carrying approximately 27 individuals, including children, underscoring the perilous journey undertaken by refugees attempting to reach safety. The community and responding agencies are now focused on search and rescue operations, with hopes of finding any remaining survivors.
