The statement from the three-member committee at Venizelio Hospital reads:

“While paid afternoon surgeries are currently at the forefront, it’s the unseen pressures of overwork and physical and mental exhaustion that have ultimately driven two more supervising anaesthesiologists at Venizelio to submit their resignations.

The recent trajectory of our hospital’s Anaesthesiology department, marred by ineffective interventions from the ministry and hospital administrations, has led to a troubling development. This situation is pushing not only the surgical sector but also other areas towards a point of collapse.

The prolonged failure to address and rectify the underlying issues has prompted numerous doctors at our hospital, and hundreds more nationwide, to resign. Meanwhile, the burden on the remaining, shrinking staff continues to escalate, pushing them towards extreme burnout.

As we await the promised “fast-track” recruitment to bolster the department, the Anaesthesiology team is on the verge of being reduced to a single permanent anaesthesiologist, supplemented by just two retirees on temporary extensions.

But let’s all get our attention back to the fiesta surrounding the afternoon surgeries…”
