The two young men, aged 27 and 23, are believed to have been seasonal firefighters. They were found dead outside their service vehicle in a difficult-to-access part of the area.
The circumstances of their deaths remain unclear, while firefighting crews continue to battle the flames.
Conditions in the area remain extremely difficult. Large numbers of firefighters, aircraft and drones are tackling the blaze, which broke out at noon on Wednesday, while strong winds are severely hampering efforts to bring it under control.
A 112 emergency alert was also issued ordering the evacuation of three settlements. Crete is currently under category 4 wildfire risk.
The Fire Service issued the following statement:
‘Today is an extremely difficult day for the Fire Service.
‘During an operation to extinguish a wildfire in the Krya Vrysi area of Rethymno, two firefighters lost their lives.
‘They fell heroically in the line of duty, protecting citizens’ lives and property, as well as the natural environment.
‘The leadership of the Fire Service expresses its profound sorrow and sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of our deceased colleagues.
‘All our thoughts are with them.’
