An internal EU document titled "Integrity of the Schengen Area" reveals that the Union is rethinking its policy regarding border control between the countries belonging to it. The document proposes the placement of Frontex forces at the north Greek borders as well as control teams at its borders with third countries, particularly in the Balkans.
A further reading of the document reveals that the proposal talks about the possible elongation of border controls in areas where the control is not efficient. Throughout the document it is clear that the EU has commenced a discussion where the protection of its external borders is of outmost importance and it is willing to consider every possible course of action to secure it.
In Greece, fears have been voiced over the fact that the document seems to “photograph” the country when mentioning the weakness to control its external borders. As a result there is a growing concern that if Greece fails to satisfy the will of the EU for border control, it might be expelled from the Schengen treaty. Answering to those concerns, the government spokesperson, O.Gerovasili accused those who express their fear that they are “altering the reality”.
