The UN General Secretary, Ban Ki Moon, is scheduled to visit Lesvos in order to assess the situation on the Island.
During his visit he is expected to meet refugees, asylum petitioners as well as volunteers that work in aid. While speaking to journalists, the secretary stated that he “will visit Lesvos in order to assess the situation and demonstrate my solidarity”.
Mr. Ban Ki Moon, noted his concern over the refugees and the people who lose their lives. “Hundreds of Syrian refugees and migrants continue to die in the Mediterranean in their effort to avoid war and persecution”.
The secretary's visit to Lesvos is part of his European round of visits that will start in Brussels on Monday where he will meet with the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk and the president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
On June 16 he is expected to visit St.Petersburgh in Russia and meet with the Russian president V. Putin. A day before his visit to Lesvos he will meet with the Greek prime minister in Athens.
