The debate on the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum sparked intense political confrontation in the Plenary of Parliament, after Makis Voridis addressed parties to the right of New Democracy with the cynical question: ‘Should we have the new Migration Pact or sink the boat?’ At another point, he asked: ‘Shall we sink the boat or not?’ His remarks provoked reactions from the opposition, with Voridis later arguing that his comment had been misinterpreted and that he had presented it as a dilemma, not as a position.
The new anti-migration framework includes measures that have already drawn criticism, including detention centres outside the EU.
