“We connect the fight for labour rights with the deaths of immigrants in police custody”
We want to remind our readers that in the early hours of September 21 September 2024, Mohammed Kamran Asik was found dead and severely beaten in the temporary detention room of the Agios Panteleimonas police station. Reports suggest that he had been detained for a week and transferred between five different police stations. Kamran, who had been working as a delivery driver before his death, became a central figure in the union’s assembly, with Jaral calling for solidarity from his former colleagues, according to KEERFA (Movement United Against Racism and the Fascist Threat).
In the announcement, it was noted that “relatives of Mohamed Kamran, a murdered migrant deliveryman at the Agios Panteleimonas police station, proposed to the General Assembly of the Attica Catering and Tourism Union to agree to a work stoppage on 12 October from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., so that delivery drivers could join the scheduled rally in Victoria Square at 2:30 p.m. on the same day.”
The proposal received strong support from workers, many of whom are already engaged in daily strike actions, particularly those employed by Wolt. “We stand united in the fight for labour rights and link our struggle against exploitative employers with the broader fight against racism and the killing of immigrants, whether in police custody or at the borders,” the statement concluded.
