Wiretapping scandal: Request for re-examination of Androulakis and Koukakis complaints rejected

The complaints filed by PASOK President Nikos Androulakis and journalist Thanasis Koukakis regarding the wiretapping scandal will remain archived, as their request for a re-examination of the case has been rejected by Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Achilleas Zisis. The request sought a renewed investigation into a private individual whose prepaid card had allegedly been used to send infected messages to targets of surveillance.
It is recalled that Androulakis and Koukakis had originally filed lawsuits against a butcher whose prepaid card was allegedly linked to the dissemination of infected messages. However, in his initial ruling, Zisis had determined that the individual in question was in fact an employee at a supermarket and had no involvement in the case, as a third party had used the card to send the messages. His conclusion, published on 29 January, reaffirmed that the butcher “had no connection to the allegations.”
Despite the complainants’ request for the case to be reopened, judicial sources indicate that the investigation conducted by Zisis was deemed thorough and conclusive, leaving no grounds for revisiting the matter. As a result, the complaints remain archived.
Both Androulakis and Koukakis were among the first to expose the infiltration of their mobile phones with malicious spyware, a revelation that had fuelled broader concerns over surveillance practices in Greece involving the government. However, following an extensive inquiry, the Supreme Court’s Prosecutor’s Office previously ruled on 30 July 2024 that there was “absolutely no involvement with the Predator spyware or any other malware from any state agency,” including the National Intelligence Service (EYP), the Anti-Terrorist Office, and the Hellenic Police.
The latest decision reaffirms the conclusions of the original investigation.
