The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday 26 November during technical work at the company’s repair base in Piraeus, the statement said. STA.SY is the state-owned company that runs Athens’s fixed-track urban transport services, including the electric rail lines serving Piraeus. The victim was a long-serving employee and a senior member of the rolling stock maintenance team.

In a statement STA.SY said: ‘The management and employees of STA.SY express our sorrow for the loss in the line of duty of a colleague of ours for many years and a member of the Fixed Transport family.’ The company added that it extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

The authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident in cooperation with STA.SY, the statement said.
