Famellos argued that Greece’s stance on Gaza isolates it internationally and exposes the country to moral and diplomatic disgrace. ‘You support Netanyahu and expose Greece,’ he told Mitsotakis, adding that the government’s refusal to act on the 2015 parliamentary decision to recognise Palestine places Greece ‘on the sidelines, not at the centre of developments’.

He described the government’s approach to diplomacy as ‘communication without substance’, mocking Mitsotakis’s pride in photo opportunities such as ‘being the décor at the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting or shaking Trump’s hand.’

On Gaza, Famellos condemned what he called the ‘genocide of the Palestinian people by Israeli forces’, and stressed that other Western states, including France, Britain, Canada and Australia, had moved to recognise Palestine. ‘Even as Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court, this government remains one of his most loyal allies,’ he said.

The SYRIZA leader also attacked the government’s handling of Greek-Turkish relations, accusing it of lacking strategy and failing to advance maritime or diplomatic negotiations. ‘You are trying to present defeats as victories. These defeats are not yours alone. They belong to the homeland, and that makes your foreign policy dangerous,’ he warned.

Famellos later met in Athens with the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, and the Palestinian ambassador, Yussef Dorkhom, reaffirming SYRIZA’s ‘consistent position’ in support of a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. ‘We will always stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people,’ he said, ‘something that expresses all Greeks.’
