In a social media post following a ceremony marking the liberation of Athens from Nazi occupation, Charitsis wrote: “I just returned from the Acropolis, where, like every year, I went to commemorate the great anniversary, the liberation of Athens from the Nazi occupation forces. It is an anniversary that reminds us of the Greek people’s indelible mark on the great anti-fascist struggle, but also that historical memory must stay alive by connecting with today’s struggles for peace, democracy and social justice.”
He noted that Athens mayor Haris Doukas attended the event and “rightly underlined this message,” while sharply criticising the Prime Minister’s absence: “Mitsotakis chose not to visit the Acropolis. No surprise, the great anti-fascist victory of our people does not concern him.”
Referring to Mitsotakis’s announcement on the Unknown Soldier monument, Charitsis called the timing “shameful,” adding: “Mr Mitsotakis, will you have the army guard a public space in the most central part of Athens? Will you put the army in charge of guarding the country’s most historic and important space for popular mobilisation and advocacy?”
He concluded: “The official representative of the most extreme Trumpism in Europe now has a name: Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The answer is one and it is clear: don’t even think about it.”
