In a social media post, Zacharaki wrote:

‘It was not the first meeting and acquaintance with the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, but it was the most meaningful, as during her visit to the Ministry of Education we had the opportunity to talk in depth about things that she herself knows well.’

She referred to joint initiatives planned for this year to mark the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi and the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, describing them as ‘two historical milestones that highlight our common ideals for freedom and democracy’.

The minister also spoke of a shared understanding that education can serve as a means of reducing inequalities, as well as the importance of special education and training.

According to her post, the discussion included academic collaborations and joint postgraduate programmes aimed at attracting more American students and researchers to Greek public universities, which, she said, the government wants to become ‘the country’s open window to the world’.

Zacharaki added that they also took part in activities with children of different ages organised at the ministry’s premises, including a visit to the nursery operating within the building.

‘Greek–American cooperation in education is not a temporary thing; it is an investment in our common future. With planning, trust and joint actions, we are building bridges of knowledge that unite the new generations of the two countries.’
