Asimakopoulou summoned for testimony over expat data leak

Summoned by the magistrate to provide explanations regarding the alleged leak of personal email data belonging to Greek expatriates shortly before the 2024 European elections, former Member of the European Parliament Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, former Secretary for Hellenic Diaspora Affairs of the New Democracy (ND) party Nikos Theodoropoulos, former Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior Michalis Stavrianoudakis, and former Regional Government Secretary of ND Menios Koromilas now face scrutiny.
It should be noted that Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou was removed from the ND’s European Parliament candidate list following public outrage over the mass emailing of expatriates and allegations of GDPR violations. The Hellenic Data Protection Authority has since imposed a fine of €40,000 for the illegal processing of personal data, along with a €400,000 fine on the Ministry of the Interior.
In a recent interview, Asimakopoulou remained unrepentant, claiming she had paid a “steep price” for the case and accusing her critics of exploiting the situation to target ND and PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis. She dismissed the allegations, rhetorically asking, “What was I supposed to do? Take a megaphone and go to Australia to ask if there are any Greeks who want to vote for me?”
