According to the group, “this aircraft, which serves Israel’s top leadership, is typically deployed at pivotal moments involving military or political operations. It was also used during Israel’s recent strike on Iran in October 2023.”

BDS Greece goes on to raise a series of questions:

  • Is Greece hosting Netanyahu – a figure accused of genocide and war crimes – or is the aircraft simply making use of Greek airport facilities as a safe parking spot, away from possible Iranian retaliation?
  • If Netanyahu is on board, how can Greece – a UN member and signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court – receive Israeli officials at a time when there is an active international arrest warrant against them?
  • The presence of the “Wing of Zion” in Athens, the group argues, highlights once more the strategic depth and geopolitical cover that Greece offers to the “killer state” of Israel. From ports and military bases to airspace and operational support, Greece is, they say, becoming an extension of the Israeli war machine.

BDS Greece demands:

  • No diplomatic, military or economic support for Israel or leaders accused of genocide.
  • Immediate cancellation of all forms of military cooperation between Greece and Israel.
  • Respect for international law and the principle of accountability.
  • Immediate sanctions on Israel to halt genocide, ethnic cleansing and the occupation of Palestine.
  • Immediate sanctions to stop Israel’s military actions against neighbouring countries.

According to information from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by SKAI TV, the aircraft was not carrying Netanyahu or any other Israeli officials.

“Due to the closure of Tel Aviv’s airport amid the ongoing crisis, the Israeli ambassador to Greece was transported on a special flight from Tel Aviv to Athens aboard the government jet, which had no other passengers on board.”
