This was Korkoneas’s third appearance before the Lamia appeals court, following a new ruling by Greece’s Supreme Court in April 2024. The Supreme Court accepted an appeal lodged by the Grigoropoulos family’s legal team, which challenged the previous court’s decision to grant Korkoneas leniency based on his prior clean record.

With the life sentence now reinstated, Korkoneas will have to serve at least 16 years before becoming eligible to apply for conditional release.

During the proceedings, Zoe Konstantopoulou, the Grigoropoulos family’s lawyer, twice requested the removal of the presiding judge – both requests were denied. She later filed a complaint against the judge, accusing her of falsifying official records and misrepresenting the court’s minutes.

Following the verdict, both Zoe and Nikos Konstantopoulos described the ruling as “a historic victory in memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos,” pointing out the emotional weight of the decision falling on what would have been Alexandros’s 30th birthday.

Meanwhile, Korkoneas’s lawyer, Vasso Pantazi, indicated that they may still challenge the verdict, leaving open the possibility of appealing once again to the Supreme Court.
