Fatal workplace accident in Argolida – 56-year-old dies after fall from contractor’s truck

According to reports, the man was employed by a subcontractor responsible for upgrading the Argos–Nafplio wastewater treatment plant. He is said to have fallen from the moving truck and died instantly.
In a statement, the Argolida Union of Private Sector Employees commented:
“Yet another fatal work accident has been added to the long and grim list of workers who never made it home after a day’s work. A fellow worker lost his life today in our region.”
The union blames the increasing number of workplace deaths on a lack of basic health and safety measures. They argue that pressure to meet tight deadlines, extended working hours, and the drive to maximise productivity often come at the cost of workers’ safety. They also point to cost-cutting by employers and insufficient state oversight as contributing factors.
“These are not just ‘accidents’. The real causes lie in the policies and practices of successive governments and employers,” the union stated.
The union is calling for:
- A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident and accountability for those responsible.
- Financial support for the family of the deceased.
- Implementation of proper health and safety measures at the Argos–Nafplio wastewater plant.
- Adequate staffing of state inspection bodies to ensure safety standards are met.
- An end to subcontracting, with permanent staff hired to meet the needs of essential infrastructure projects.
The union’s executive board expressed its sincere condolences to the worker’s family.
