In May 2024, the Data protection Authority (HDPA) imposed a €40,000 fine on former Secretary for Hellenic Diaspora Affairs, Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, for the unlawful processing of personal data and a €400,000 fine on the Ministry of the Interior for its role in the breach.

According to the HDPA decision:

For violations of Articles 5, paragraph 1(a), 6, paragraph 1, and 14 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as outlined in section B1:
i) A fine of €40,000 is imposed on Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, as the data controller, under Article 58, paragraph 2(i) of the GDPR.
ii) An order is issued, pursuant to Article 58, paragraph 2(g) of the GDPR, requiring Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, as the data controller, to delete all data of expatriate voters.”

For violations of Articles 5, paragraph 1(g), 25, paragraph 1, 32, and 33, paragraphs 3–5 of the GDPR, as well as Article 30, detailed in section B4 of the decision:
i) A fine of €400,000 is imposed on the Ministry of the Interior, as the data controller, under Article 58,
paragraph 2(i) of the GDPR.
ii) The Ministry is also directed to take corrective measures under Article 58,
paragraph 2(d) of the GDPR.
