The statement emphasized that these events marked a critical moment for the police to demonstrate professionalism and democratic sensitivity. ELEDA also called for immediate accountability for the unlawful acts recorded, urging the authorities, especially the judiciary, to take appropriate action.
“In the days leading up to the protest, the PM and several government officials publicly reaffirmed their respect for citizens’ constitutional right to assemble and voice political dissent. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Citizen Protection deployed an unprecedented police presence, particularly in Athens, to ensure the protests were carried out without incident.
“Unfortunately, our hopes were sorely disappointed. ELAS forces put on full display, on camera, their entire repertoire of unlawful practices—both in terms of legality and professionalism—that we have come to expect in the handling of political protests:
- Unprovoked bullying and injuries inflicted on demonstrators and journalists by riot police forces.
- Stone-throwing with “opposing groups.”
- Widespread use of tear gas, even in enclosed spaces, endangering public health.
- Use of water cannons against peaceful protesters.
- Repeated raids on demonstrators trying to escape police violence.
- Violent arrests both before and after the protest, including at the entrance of the Metropolitan Cathedral and journalists’ offices.”
“The constitutional order of our democracy has, at least institutionally, mechanisms in place to control police excesses—disciplinary bodies, judicial authorities, and, crucially, public prosecutors. However, ELEDA, alongside independent authorities and international organisations, has documented countless instances of inaction and bias, which have created a climate of impunity for police violence.
Nonetheless, we continue to hope—albeit in vain—that the competent authorities, especially the judiciary, will carry out their duties and swiftly hold those responsible for the unlawful acts that have been recorded.”
