In addition to New Democracy, deputies from PASOK, SYRIZA, Hellenic Solution, Spartans, and the majority of independent MPs voted in favour of Kaklamanis. The KKE, New Left, Niki, Pleusi Eleftherias, and four independent MPs from Spartans chose not to endorse his election.
Following the announcement of the result, Kaklamanis expressed his gratitude and pledged to justify the trust placed in him:
“At the end of my term, I want to have done everything in my power so that no one regrets the vote they gave me.”
Kaklamanis’ speech in full
“Mr. Prime Minister, esteemed leaders of the parliamentary groups, fellow Members of Parliament, dear colleagues,
It is a great honour, a profound responsibility, and a moment of immense joy to assume today the role of the 14th President of the Hellenic Parliament. Your vote has once again united the Parliament from end to end. The steadfast, unwavering trust you have placed in me throughout these years deeply moves me. It is proof that the integrity of my path and intentions has never been questioned.
Looking back to 1990, when I was first elected as an MP for A’ Athens, I could never have imagined this moment. Even more so, I could never have imagined—as a young boy who once took the boat from Andros to study medicine—that today I would be standing here, experiencing such a pinnacle in my political journey. A moment that marks the culmination of a lifetime of service.
For all of this, I owe a profound ‘thank you’—to all of you and to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. But above all, I owe an even greater ‘thank you’ to the people of Athens, the city that has defined me, just as I have given my life to it for decades. To those who continue to place their trust in me—not just politically, but with a vote from the heart.
My entire journey, from my early years in the youth of ERE, through my student activism, to this very moment, has been defined by an unwavering commitment to my principles. I have always lived and acted according to a steadfast code of values—without concessions, without compromises, and without ‘yes, but.’”
