Lawsuit filed against TPP journalist Konstantinos Poulis by convicted assailant in Zak Kostopoulos Case
Poulis had extensively covered the high-profile trial of Kostopoulos’ death, including attending the hearing on October 2, 2024, where Chortarias’ request for suspension of his sentence was rejected. The journalist later published an article titled “Prosecutor on Chortarias’ application for suspension: ‘maggots are feeding on the other one in his grave, however,’ (meaning, while the convicted Chortarias was complaining about having financial problems, the victim (‘i.e. the other one’) was dead),” which forms the basis of the lawsuit.
Claims of defamation and insult
In his lawsuit, Chortarias objects to Poulis’ use of the term “thug” in his reporting, describing it as defamatory. The article in question detailed courtroom proceedings and included the Prosecutor’s exclamation, referenced in the title. Poulis argued that the characterisation aligned with the dictionary definition of a thug: someone who uses violence and arrogance to impose their will, as captured in widely circulated video evidence and confirmed in court rulings.
The lawsuit also targets the Prosecutor’s quoted remark, which Chortarias admits prompted him to file disciplinary action against the judicial officer. Poulis contends that his reporting reflects factual courtroom exchanges, emphasising the public’s right to be informed about such proceedings.
Relatives file additional lawsuits against journalist Anna Nini
Relatives of Chortarias have also filed lawsuits against journalist Anna Nini, citing alleged breaches of personal data. Nini documented and shared footage from the court session in which police restrained Chortarias’ wife after she verbally and physically confronted the lawyers representing Kostopoulos’ family.
Nini defended her actions, stating that her footage captured significant moments of public interest, particularly concerning the safety of those involved in the trial. She described how relatives of the convicted real estate agent verbally attacked the lawyers after the verdict was announced.
